Is it tacky to convert a formal dining room into a sitting room?

Our kitchen has a large breakfast nook, which is where our original dining room table from our old house currently is. We purchased a new dining room table, but over the years, the style of our family/great room (which is partially connected to the dining room) has morphed and now the modern style dining room table we have in the dining room, no longer matches the rest of the house, nor does the color of the wood. In addition to this, we NEVER use the dining room. Even when we have guests over, we usually host them outdoors by the pool or we bring in banquet tables and rearrange the living room. The attached picture, is from the home listing with the previous owner's furniture (only picture I have that shows the layout), anyhow the area to the left in the picture is dining room. My question is, would it be tacky to convert this area into a sitting room? We would get more use out of the space this way, but I don't want to compromise the style/appearance of the home.Is it tacky to convert a formal dining room into a sitting room
